Encourage youth to wait for marriage.Today’s culture bombards youth with messages to have sex as early and often as possible.Unfortunately, educators often leave out consequences of sex before marriage when teaching “safer sex” programs. The contradiction of self-control promoted by the Character Counts program also ironic. The NM Sec of Education issued a policy against the teaching of abstinence in NM public schools.NM had been receiving federal funding of about $500K annually for abstinence education that promoted saving sex for marriage. The NM Abstinence Education Coalition continues to promote abstinence education in NM.http://www.nmaec.org/
